Why is the staff sometimes shown vertically?

By default, in lessons and practice mode, the staff is often shown first in a vertical orientation. The staff lines run up-and-down instead of the usual left to right.

An important concept that this app helps reinforce is how the up-and-down movement of notes on the staff corresponds to up–and-down movement on the piano keyboard. It can be easier to understand how each staff line or space corresponds with a particular piano key when they are seen aligned vertically.

After a few intervals in this arrangement, the staff rotates to its normal horizontal orientation. In this way, children help make the connection that up on the staff corresponds to right on the keys. Similarly, down on the staff corresponds to left on the keys.

How to disable the vertical staff

Once a student is comfortable with this concept, they might want to only want to practice with the staff in its normal, horizontal orientation. You can do this by first opening the settings window (tap the gear icon dangling from the upper left of the startup screen) and then tapping the appropriate setting so that it changes to read, Horizontal Staff Practice Only.

Take note...

...this setting does not affect the tutorial lessons. Lessons will always include a bit of vertical staff practice in the easier levels. This setting only changes whether vertical staff practice is included in practice mode. Game mode features only horizontal staff practice.
